Is My Child Ready for Violin Lessons?

We know that young children are often not able to sit or stand still for more than a few minutes at a time, let alone focus for more than a short period. Our instructors are well aware of this and tailor their violin lessons to the student’s individual needs and abilities. Even if your child is very young, our Walpole Violin Teachers have ways to engage and inspire with plenty of age-appropriate activities.

In deciding whether or not to move forward, if you answer yes to the following three questions, we believe that your younger child could be ready:

1. Does my child have the ability to follow instruction when engaged and interested?

2. Can my child maintain a calm body for 5 minutes at a time?

3. Does my child have at least average coordination and muscle tone?

How Long Are Your Walpole Violin Lessons?

Our Walpole Music School offers 30, 45, or 60 minute sessions. Typically, violin lessons for children under the age of 10 start out with 30 minute lessons and advance to longer slots as they get more skilled and need more attention from our instructors.

Are There Performance Opportunities?

Absolutely! The Walpole School of Music is part of Maestro Musicians, LLC, which organizes a minimum of 4 concerts per year in houses of worship and assisted living facilities around greater Boston. While we never push a student to perform, participation is highly encouraged because this gives students a goal to work toward, the ability to see a project from start to finish, and a sense of pride in their accomplishments!

Should I Buy or Rent an Instrument? And Do I Need One Before the First Lesson?

Students are expected to have an instrument for the first lesson. If a student is under the age of 13, we strongly recommend renting the instrument as opposed to buying. Please contact the main office for information as to where you can rent a violin.

What Training Do Your Walpole Violin Teachers Have?

Our Walpole Violin Instructors have degrees and certifications from the finest conservatories and music programs in the world. Because Boston is such a big hub for attracting top talent, we are fortunate to have a large pool of instructors who wish to work for us. In our hiring process, we give strong preference to teachers who have positive personalities and an ability to inspire children and nurture their unique talents.

What Methods Do Your Teachers Use?

Our Walpole Music School does not advocate a particular method. Yet, in the United States, it has become almost universally accepted that many violin teachers will start out students with the Suzuki Method Books. While there are a number of reasons for this, by and large, this is due to the fact that Suzuki Method books have repertoire that takes children on a step-by-step journey that empowers them as they advance through each piece of music.
